Meaning of the Flag
[edit]This flag features six bold U's in light blue and white, intertwined to form a star on a dark blue field. These colors, symbolizing stability and peace, are legacy colors for Urbandale.
The two colors of the U's represent the two counties where Urbandale is expanding.
The U's coming together unite the elements of people, natural resources, businesses, schools, transportation, and local government into a stronger, more beautiful whole. The endless pattern symbolizes the community's ongoing journey forward together.
The bright star against the dark blue sky represents a firework from Urbandale's Independence Day celebration and is a bold statement about a positive future for the community.

About the Process
[edit]The Urbandale City Council approved a resolution #200-2023 in October 2023 recognizing the importance of a flag for Urbandale and with that approval, initiated an approximately eight-month process to receive designs and input to develop and approve a new flag for the City. This process engaged hundreds of people. Over 440 designs were submitted for consideration, many from Urbandale, but also from across Central Iowa and some other states.[1]
A Flag Design Committee composed of Mayor Robert D. Andeweg, Councilmember Blake Rozendaal, Urbandale Historical Society officer and resident Dr. Edward (Pat) Finnerty, graphic designer and resident Emma Thomas-McGinnis, as well as municipal staff members City Manager A.J. Johnson, Director of Communications Derek Zarn and Assistant City Manager Curtis Brown facilitated the flag design process.[2]
The Flag Design Committee and a volunteer Flag Design Selection Working Group composed of community members Hana Ahmed, Cate Newberg, Gavin Moore, Jodi Gilson Schrage, Lisa Flyr, and Samuel Larson reviewed all of the submissions and worked through several meetings to present twelve designs to the Mayor and City Council for rating.[3]
The City Council rating yielded five designs which were presented to the community for consideration. Over 500 people rated the five flags and clearly indicated from among the five designs relatively high favorability and low unfavourability ratings for one of the designs. Once a favored design was evident, the Flag Design Committee consulted the secretary of the North American Vexillological Association for design guidance and flag fabric manufacturers for color selection guidance. The graphic designers on the Committee refined the design based on that feedback and guidance. [4]
Approved by the City Council on March 5, 2024: "Council affirms that final design is entrusted to the Flag Design Committee which will produce a final design to be revealed at the State of the City and considered for adoption by the City Council on July 2, 2024." [5]
The meaning of the flag design was composed through feedback from the community and reviewed by the Flag Design Committee. Resolution #185-2024 adopting a City Flag for the City of Urbandale was approved at the Council meeting on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.[6]
