Summary

[edit]
Description
English: City Chambers, High Street The Royal Exchange, designed by John Adam and built between 1753 and 1761, was created for lawyers and merchants to conduct their business, though it seems they stuck obstinately to their habit of gathering at the nearby Mercat Cross. From 1811 it became the meeting-place of Edinburgh's City Council. Below the building lies the subterranean Mary King's Close which was abandoned and sealed off after the plague of 1645 had claimed most of its inhabitants. Once a place of terror and superstition, it now gives visiting tourists a frisson of excitement as they descend into a veritable time capsule.
