Description

The creatively-named City Building in St. Charles (1892). The building functioned as the city hall until 1941. St. Charles was first settled in 1833 in the aftermath of the Black Hawk War. It was originally known as Chareston, but once the settlers realized that a downstate settlement had already taken the same, they changed it to St. Charles. The town was incorporated in 1834. Throughout its history, St. Charles struggled with its relative isolation. There was no easy route to Chicago, and large boats could not navigate that far up the Fox River. It wasn't untilt he Chicago Great Western built a station there in the 1880s that the town saw any significant economic success. A direct road to Chicago was finally built in 1920.
