| Description | The scars of urban renewal are still evident in Cincinnati's West End and former Kenyon-Barr neighborhood. Once home to a culturally vibrant African-American Community, thousands of neglected, yet beautiful historic residential, commercial, and industrial structures, churches, and tens of thousands of people, the neighborhood was partially leveled in the 1930s for a federally-funded housing complex, which stood where the Laurel Park portion of the City West Development now stands in the area bounded by John Street, Ezzard Charles Drive, Linn Street, and Liberty Street. Despite signs early on that the redevelopment hadn't really succeeded in making the neighborhood better, much of the rest of the neighborhood was leveled anyway in the early 1960s for the Queensgate Industrial Park, Interstate 75, several new low-income housing projects, and some new amenities such as parks, recreation centers, and a library, which can be seen in the first two photos. Some suburban-style commercial development took shape along Linn Street following its widening and the destruction of most historic structures along its length, including Richie's Fast Food, which is shown in picture five. A few isolated buildings, such as the yellow mixed-use former corner store building in pictures three and four, remain to the west of John Street and south of Liberty Street in the area. Much of the public housing constructed in the area was demolished in the late 1990s and early 2000s to make way for City West, which remains incomplete, with vacant lots still in existence where old mid-20th Century apartments once stood, as can be seen in pictures six and seven. Today, the West End is an prime example of urban renewal's negative effects, and the scars are still evident from the poor decisions made last Century. Though some effort has been made to remedy the situation, the area remains weakened by what was done to it by shortsighted decisions that didn't take into account the impact on the people or the neighborhood. |
