Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Citadel watchtower, Hull. A heritage plaque on the brick structure reads: "This 17th century watchtower marks the east point of Hull Citadel built 1681-90. The Citadel was a massive triangular fort incorporating earlier defences alongside the River Hull. It was levelled in 1863-4". The watchtower spent many years as part of the 'Khyber Pass' cliff garden and folly at Hull's East Park before being 'rescued' and installed here (see 214532). Other sources express some surprise that it survived in the park as the Khyber Pass was a popular play area for children, but I was one of those children and we always avoided the tower because of the stench (it was regularly used by people who couldn't make it to the nearest public toilet).
