Summary
[edit]DescriptionCinderfords first railway station (geograph 6490097).jpg |
English: Cinderford's first railway station Another view of Cinderford's first railway station. The station, inconveniently sited a mile or so from the town centre across boggy moorland, was always unpopular with passengers. The Severn & Wye, who operated the line, laid on a coach to meet each train and transport passengers into the town centre, but this was not enough and in 1900 the S&W opened an extension to their line with a new station closer to the town centre. There is very little left of the "new" station - itself closed to passengers in 1958 and redeveloped in the 1970s as a small housing estate - but ironically, the remnants of the platform of the old station survive, forgotten, in a clump of trees, 120 years after it was last used. I stood on what was once the trackbed to take this; the remains of the platform are on the centre right of the shot where the ferns are growing. |
