Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Cinder cone complex in the Pleistocene of Idaho, USA.

This is Sunset Crater, a cinder cone complex in Idaho's Craters of the Moon Lava Field. Cinder cones are relatively small, steep-sided volcanic cones of loose igneous debris. They have few eruptions and a relatively large summit crater. Cinder cones are principally composed of scoria and vesicular basalt.

The Sunset Crater complex has eight preserved craters. Twelve thousand years ago, basalt and hawaiite lava flows were erupted from the complex - these principally have pahoehoe lava flow tops. Some aa lava is also present. Hawaiite is an alkaline variety of basalt.

The roadcut of mafic tephra in the right foreground is bisected through a small buildup around one of Sunset Crater's peripheral craters.

Locality: Sunset Crater (looking ~west from Route 26), Craters of the Moon National Monument, Snake River Plain, southern Idaho, USA
