Notes Souvenir aluminium cigarette holder that belonged to 423170 Private Ralph Turner, 21st Infantry Battalion, during WW2. Probably acquired (or made) by him while based in Italy, and kept in the tin container used to carry this and other souvenirs. Ralph Turner, farmhand of Wayby (near Wellsford), enlisted in 1942 (9th Roll Embarkations) and served with the 21st Infantry Battalion in North Africa and Italy. He carried his 'trench kit' with him everywhere and "when there was nothing to do made his souvenir "stuff - it was how they kept their sanity". He gave pieces that he had made as gifts to women (in Italy) or swapped pieces for rations.
