Summary
[edit]DescriptionChurchdown railway station geograph-2539415-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg |
English: Cheltenham - Paddington express passing Churchdown station. View eastward, towards Cheltenham, also Birmingham etc.: ex-GW & Midland Joint main line (Cheltenham Lansdown Junction - Gloucester Engine Shed Junction section, quadrupled August 1942). In steam days, London trains were worked by smaller engines between Cheltenham St James' and Gloucester, where they reversed and a 4-6-0 express locomotive took over; here a smart ex-Works Collett '2251' 0-6-0 No. 3201 (built 9/46) is bringing the 11.45 Paddington express from St James' as far as Gloucester. At Churchdown the new lines in 1942 were taken round the back on each side and the partially rebuilt station was provided with two island platforms. Then from 2/11/64 the station was closed and - after only 24 years' use - in 1966-67 the relief lines were taken up because through traffic had fallen off to such an extent.
