Summary
[edit]DescriptionChurch of St Peter, Newdigate - geograph.org.uk - 499135.jpg |
English: Church of St Peter, Newdigate Found opposite the Six Bells pub at the junction of Rusper Road and Church Lane this has been a place of worship for the best part of a thousand years http://www.acny.org.uk/venue.php?V=8229. The oldest parts of the church date from the 12th or 13th-century (depending on which history you read) with subsequent major additions in the 14th, 16th and 19th-centuries. The wooden west tower is acclaimed as one of the finest oak structures in England http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=42972#s1 and houses 6 bells cast in 1803 by Thomas Mears of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry Whitechapel_Bell_Foundry. These fine bells found the perfect home as the Newdigate ringers soon became champions http://www.folk-network.com/miscellany/burstow/burstow_bellringing_2.html#98.
At the end of an evening of ringing the changes on Thomas Mears' six bells the ringers would be able to cross the road to enjoy a drink, a smoke and a song in the other Six Bells! Sometimes it's easy to work out how a pub got its name. |
