| Description |
English: The Church of St John the Baptist, situated in Frome town centre, is a hidden gem. Not easily seen from the main roads or one of the county's more famous churches, this is a beautiful and deceptively spacious church.
Founded by Aldhelm, Bishop of Sherborne, in the 7th century, the first building was a wooden church located on the present site, at that time a rural location in Selwood Forest. The church has been remodelled and rebuilt several times, most recently in the Victorian times. The present building is a large structure, with a spacious aisled nave of eight bays, transepts, chancel and several chapels. A modest tower sits over part of the south aisle, topped by a slender spire. The church is open during daylight hours and is well worth a visit. |
