Summary
[edit]DescriptionChurch of Saint Peter in Gallicantu (3622194565).jpg |
The Catholic Church of Saint Peter in Gallicantu, on the Western Hill of Jerusalem. The church stands just outside the present walls of the "Old City" but within the area of the first-century city. The Assumptionist fathers who built and maintain the church claim that one of the artificial caverns beneath the church (called the "sacred pit") is the jail in the basement of Caiaphas' house, where Jesus was held on the night before his crucifixion. Although the church does stand above the remains of a large first-century dwelling, there is no particular reason to claim that the house belonged to the high-priest. The "sacred pit" is also unlikely to have been used as a prison. It looks more like a cistern that would have stored water for the household. |
