Summary
[edit]DescriptionChurch of God Tabernacle - fmr St. James Evangelical Church - Buffalo, New York - 20200525.jpg |
English: Church of God Tabernacle, 526 High Street at Johnson Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. Built in 1926 according to a simplified Gothic Revival design by architect Frank Spangenberg, the overall boxy form of the building points the way forward to Modernism, yet the detailing on the front façade is exquisite: decorative parapets appear not only at the roofline of the building itself but also above the compound-arched entrance, the latter sporting a cross-and-crown relief. The large stained glass window that dominates the façade is crowned by a prominent hood molding. The building spent the first chapter of its history serving as home to St. James Evangelical Church, which splintered from St. Mark's Evangelical in 1883 over dispute among the congregation and worshiped in a location on Jefferson Avenue until a 1923 fire destroyed their former building. The congregation, by then called St. James United Church of Christ, merged with a neighboring one in 1956 and vacated this building; after a series of subsequent mergers, they remain in existence at St. Stephen's-Bethlehem United Church of Christ and are located in the suburb of Amherst. Church of God Tabernacle, the building's current occupant, purchased the building the following year and continue in operation there. |
