Summary

[edit]
Description

From yesterday's luxurious properties to the spartan settings of the Aran Islands at the turn of the last century.

With thanks to [/photos/8468254@N02/ derangedlemur], [/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac], [/photos/79549245@N06/ DannyM8], and in particular [/photos/75556178@N05/ Mike (Inverarra)], we have additional detail on the location and destiny of this little church. "Eaglais San Thomáis" (the church of Saint Thomas) served the Anglican/COI community in Kilthomas from the 1840s to the 20th century. As per the images and "potted history" which Mike shares, the church is now a ruin, and the roof was removed in the mid-20th century. While likely mirroring an overall decline in the island's population (from ~2500 when the church opened in the 1840s, to ~800 in the 2011 census), it's worth noting that there are three churches still serving the island's community: Kilronan RC (dating from 1905), Eochaill chapel (1833) and Eoghanacht church (1958). Thanks again all!
