35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Reptilia; Order: Squamata; Family: Iguanidae; Genus: Sauromalus; Genus species: Sauromalus obesus. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 28-42 cm; Identification: The chuckwalla has dark skin and a pale yellow tail. The male is speckled with yellow and red, and the female has dark cross bands; Habitat: Rocky deserts; Diet: Herbivore: leaves, buds, flowers; Reproduction: Female chuckwallas breed every other year. They lay 5-10 eggs each breeding season; Behavior: As a defense, the chuckwalla will wedge itself into a rock crevice and inflate its body with air, making it very difficult for the predator to remove it; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: These desert-living lizards store extra liquid in their accessory lymph nodes.
