| Description | Chrysler AP5 Valiant Regal sedan. Taken at the Chrysler Car Museum in Grenfell, New South Wales. Released in May 1963, the AP5 was the first Valiant fully produced in Australia, instead of just being assembled here. While it shared front sheetmetal and doors with the US 1963 Valiant, it featured an Australian designed grille and the rear end was unique to Australian cars. The AP stood for either Australian Plymouth or Australian Production, depending on who you ask, the 5 meant the fifth design produced. The AP1, AP2 and AP3 designations were allocated to the three series of Chrysler Royals built from 1957 to 1962, and the number 4 was allocated to the AT4 series Dodge trucks released in 1962. (presumably Australian Truck - design number 4). The AP5 was also the first series to feature an upmarket version of the Valiant, the Regal, as well as the first Australian Valiant to offer a staion wagon, called the Safari. |
