Description This smaller copy of the giant statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro is actually in Cacilhas, on the opposite side of the Tagus river from Portugal. Great views from up here across to Lisbon, Belem and up the coast to Estoril and Cascais. The statue was started in 1950, completed in 1959 - Salazar's time, though you won't find much about that on the official plaque on the monument. The church vowed in 1940 that the statue would be built if Portugal was saved from WWII. It was - Portugal remained neutral (with Spain, Switzerland and Sweden) though it provided 10,000 'volunteer' soldiers to the Allies.
