Summary
[edit]DescriptionChristchurch Anglican Cathedral (22708210313).jpg |
Construction of Christchurch’s iconic Anglican Cathedral was completed in 1904, 40 years after the cornerstone was laid on 16 December, 1864. Located in the aptly named Cathedral Square in the city centre, building began under the leadership of Reverend Henry John Chitty Harper. Over its lifetime, the Cathedral withstood multiple earthquakes. However, it was severely damaged in the February quakes of 2011, and has since been partially demolished. The future of it remains uncertain. This glass lantern slide captures the Cathedral and surrounds in hand coloured glory. The exact date and creator of the photograph is unknown. Many lantern slides held at Archives contain beautifully rendered images of New Zealand landscape and people, promoting New Zealand as a tourist destination. Lantern slides became popular as a medium for displaying photographic images in the mid-nineteenth century. A transparent slide was placed into a projector which illuminated the image and projected it onto a surface. This changed the experience of viewing photographs from an individual to a collective one, as it enabled large audiences of people to view the image at the same time. Lantern slides remained popular until the mid-twentieth century when they were rendered obsolete by new photographic technology.
