Summary
[edit]DescriptionChristchurch, smugglers' cache - geograph.org.uk - 1435208.jpg |
English: Christchurch, smugglers' cache Look carefully at the roof of Carphone Warehouse, at the junction of High & Millhams Streets: between the two chimney pots is a small section of roof, parallel with High Street, and only visible from the alley opposite. This was used by smugglers to hide contraband if the Revenue visited. Christchurch, like other towns and villages on the South coast in the C18, was a hive of smuggling. |
