The composition rerflects a lost, early work by Jan van Eyck, known in a copy from 1530 in the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. The inscription refers to the annual Procession of the Holy Blood in Bruges. Members of the confraternity of the Holy Blood advance at the rightbehind a centurion who carries the group's official standard.
