Français : Centaines d'ouvriers travaillant au percement du canal de Cho Cao. L'ouvrage Des photographes en Indochine attribue cette photo à Gsell. Voici ce que Frédéric Mantienne explique du percement de ce canal : "Le développement de la grande culture du riz dans le delta avec des capitaux chinois et européens nécessita une politique de grands travaux : canaux de drainage, et canaux pour le transport du riz. [...] En 1875, l'amiral Duperré décida le creusement d'un canal rejoignant directement le Cua Tiêu au Vaïco oriental (rivière coulant à l'ouest de Saïgon, et se jetant dans l'estuaire de la rivière de Saïgon), et permettant à des bateaux à vapeur de transporter le riz. Quarante mille ouvriers fournis par la corvée y furent affectés.". Il est difficile de savoir si ce tirage a été réalisé du vivant de Gsell ou après sa mort. |
