English: Chlorite schist from the Precambrian of Michigan, USA.
Schist is a foliated, intermediate- to high-grade metamorphic rock. It varies considerably in appearance, but has macroscopic crystals and chunky weathering (in contrast with slate and phyllite, which have microscopic crystals and weather into thin, flat pieces or slightly chunky flat pieces). The greenish-gray material in this sample is chlorite. Acicular sprays of amphibole (apparently grunerite) are present, plus small patches of iron sulfide. Geologic unit: possibly from a metamorphosed intrusion in the Negaunee Iron-Formation (if so, is Paleoproterozoic, 1.85 to 1.86 Ga) Locality: sample from disturbed mine waste rock pile/road construction talus pile near the Michigamme Mine (Mt. Shasta Mine), near the northwestern corner of Lake Michigamme, northeastern side of the town of Michigamme, Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA (vicinity of 46° 32’ 18.87" North latitude, 88° 05’ 40.50" West longitude) |
