Nederlands: De van oorsprong Duitse arts Von Siebold vertrekt in opdracht van de Nederlandse regering in 1823 naar Japan. Hij moet er informatie over het land verzamelen en les te geven. Hij heeft groot succes, de Japanse autoriteiten staan zelfs toe dat hij buiten Deshima een medische praktijk opricht waar hij ook onderwijs geeft. Von Siebold maakt een hofreis mee, en bouwt een goede reputatie op bij vele Japanse wetenschappers. In 1828 wordt hij uit Japan verbannen wanneer wordt ontdekt dat hij een Japanse landkaart naar huis wil sturen. Dat heeft de Japanse overheid expliciet verboden. Eenmaal terug in Nederland stelt hij de objecten die hij tijdens zijn reizen in Japan heeft verzameld ten toon, en schrijft verschillende boeken, zoals Nippon en Flora Japonica. Pas in 1859, wanneer het land haar strenge afsluitingspolitiek eindelijk laat varen, keert Von Siebold terug naar Japan. English: The German born physician Von Siebold left for Japan in 1823 by order of the Dutch government. He was to gather information about the country and take up teaching. He was very successful and the Japanese authorities even allowed him to start a medical practice outside Deshima, where he taught as well. Van Siebold also participated in a journey to the court and built up a good reputation with many Japanese scientists. In 1928, he was exiled from Japan when it was discovered that he wanted to send a map of Japan to the Netherlands, an act strictly forbidden by the Japanese government. On returning to the Netherlands, he exhibited the objects he had collected while traveling in Japan and he wrote several books, including Nippon and Flora Japonica. He did not return to Japan until 1859, when the country had finally given up its stringent isolation policy. |
