Description

Woman putting on her opera makeup. This took between one and a half and two hours every night. This travelling opera company was set up in a makeshift tent.

Wayang is a form of traditional Chinese Opera. In modern Singapore, there a still a few troupes who pitch a tent and perform for several evenings at a time.

Many thanks to the members of the Sin Hong Choo Traveling Hokkien Opera Company in Singapore for allowing themselves to be photographed on three successive evenings. The name means 'One Pearl'.
