HANGCHOW: THE NORTH GATE GOOD-BYE TO HANGCHOW swarms of people came to surround and watch me. Mylawdah got his rope out and formed a triangle with it tokeep the crowd off, and he and the coolies had theirwork cut out. The people coming out of the citygates would make straight for me and get in my way,so a coolie was instructed to keep them off; and onetime, on looking up, I was amused to see that my cooliehad got one of my straps and with it was deliberatelysmacking a man over the head and face to make him getout of the way. I could not help laughing even though Icalled out to him to desist, but every one laughed—eventhe man who had been strapped!
