Description

Cutemu, Chile, false color Date: 2016-12-20 Info: The 2017 Chile wildfires were a series of wildfires that burned across Chile during January 2017. On January 27–28, a wildfire described as the worst in Chile’s modern history killed at least 11 people, and destroyed the town of Santa Olga in the central Maule Region, displacing thousands of people. At least 1 000 homes were destroyed in the blaze.

The fires burned almost 600 000 hectares of land, including 15 000 hectares of protected old-growth forest.
