English: A head that broke of the body, probably while being moved.
Workers would find a good section to work that was free of cracks. They would cut a half meter (1.64ft) wide section around the block to be carved where the sculptors could work. All the moai were carved on their backs using basalt tools, starting from the head down. After being carved they would then slide the statue down the hill, some would break at this time. They would be placed in a hole in the vertical position and the work completed on the moai. Rapa Nui National Park, the moai factory. The moai were carved and then taken to the ahu (ceremonial platforms) all over the island, to honour the memory of the ancestors. The southern slope of the volcano is amazing to see with dozens of stone heads sticking out of the ground.completed on the moai. |
