lettuce:. An indispensable vegetable—certainly the finest salad plant known. Easily grown, either in hot-bed or garden, and can be sown very early. South of Mason and Dixon's line can be sown in the open ground in fall, and needs only a slight protection of straw or loose litter to be perfectly hardy. We wish to call special attention to our two superior varieties. Half-Century and Half-Century Crisphead. If you have never tried them a real pleasure and satisfaction awaits you. CHILDS' HALF-CENTURY LETTUCE—THE FAR-FAMED. We all know how much careful selection year after year has to do with the quality of our vegetables, but there are few things that can claim a half-century descent from only the choicest and best specimens of one type. This lettuce can do so, however, and we are not surprised, therefore, at its' superior qualities. Its leaves fold together, forming a long loose head, remarkable for tenderness and delicious flavor. It may seem a good deal to say, but it is. nevertheless, a fac that for tenderness, brittleness and delicious quality this Lettuce grown in the open ground surpasses any other sort grow under glass. Nothing can approach it in quality. It is so brittle and tender that its leaves break to pieces in handling if care is not used. It is a quick grower, attaining its full size in forty to fifty days, and remains in fine condition for long time. Pkt., 5c; oz., 10c; lb., $1.30. CHILDS' HALF-CENTURY CRISPHEAD LETTUCE—THE PERFECT. It is with much pleasure we offer a sport from our famous Half-Century Lettuce, that produces a large, solid head. It has much the same characteristics of the Half-Century, being exceedingly criso, brittle and unsurpassed in flavor; but it is a true heading variety, forming a solid head, as large as a small Cabbage. It is superior to all other head varieties in superb quality, a quick grower and long keeper. The California expert growers of Lettuce say that " Crisphead is the longest keeping head variety in cultivation. The value of this cannot be overestimated. Its superb quality makes it the finest Lettuce for the home garden, which, with its long keeping quality, must make it the best and most popular sort for market growing It is one of the best new vegetables ever introduced.
