Title
English: Children at a Temperance rally, Silvana, Washington, ca. 1908
Description
English:

Throughout the history of the United States, people have founded various organizations to try to stop the sale and drinking of alcohol. During the 19th and early 20th century, this was known as the temperance movement. Groups held rallies, promoted the health benefits of drinking water and tried to get local and state governments to make it illegal to sell alcoholic drinks. This photo, taken around 1908, shows a group of young people and adults at a temperance rally near the water tower in Silvana, Washington. The two Lutheran pastors who organized the 4th of July event hoped to convince the city government to go "dry." The city council agreed and closed all local bars and taverns.
