A geologist is a man who knows all aboutstones and how the earth is made. A stratum (which isreally a Latin word adopted by the English language)means a layer. Nearly all our earth is in layers orstrata of one kind or another. In a sand-pit or anyquarry you can generally see the strata, because eitherthey are different in colour, or the harder ones stickout a little because the softer get dislodged or washedout by wind and rain. So you see the sand-martinlooks out for a stratum that just suits him for digging—not too hard for his tender little bill, and not so softthat it would crumble away. You see they like playingin the sand-pit too, only their play is in good earnest. Where there are sandy places there are generallyFir-trees. We look out for the fallen cones.
