cE. You will see moreof them in the hedges than in the garden, but if thereis a big bog-garden at your home I daresay there willbe plants of the giant Cow-parsnip, the biggest of theumbelliferous things. All the Parsley-Carrot-Fennelsort of plants have their flowers in umbels. The flowersin themselves are generally tiny, and mostly white andyellow. They are on a number of little stalks thatall branch away from one point on the top of a largerstalk, so that sometimes they make a roundish headand sometimes a flat one, or anything between. Youmay always know the flower of the wild Carrot by itshaving in the middle of its head of white flowers onelittle one of a chocolate-red colour. Now, I think this is nearly all the botany we wantfor the present; stop, though, we mustnt forget bulbs.When you see a plant with plain, straight, rather fleshyleaves coming up from the root, and an unbranchedflower-stem coming up from the root too, you may bepretty sure that the root is a bulb.
