Description |
The city purchased the land for Volunteer Park from James Colman in 1876 and development of the land began into a park began in the 1890s. The water reservoir was constructed in 1901, followed by the Water Tower in 1906. Volunteer Park was originally known as City Park but the name was changed in 1901 to honor Spanish American War veterans. Transcribed from postcard: ""The city of Seattle owns 22 playgrounds, from a block to thirty acres in area. Twelve are equipped with modern outdoor gymnasium, with experienced supervisors in charge. Four have field or recreation houses, with gymnasiums, libraries, club rooms and assembly halls.""
