The Divers are remarkable for their powers of diving.The legs are placed very far behind, and the toes areso arranged as to fold up when returning from thestroke. The foot of the Grebes is not webbed like that ofmost water birds, but each toe is separated and flattened,so as to serve as a separate paddle. The Puffin is an excellent diver, plunging fearlesslyfrom a lofty cliff into the sea, and speedily returningwith its beak full of fish, usually sprats, which are se-cured by their heads, and lie in a row along the billof the Puffin, forming a kind of piscatorial fringe.Its enormous and sharp-edged bill renders it a for-midable antagonist to intruders. The Cape Penguin is very common at the Cape ofGood Hope and the Falkland Islands. From the ex-traordinary sound it produces while on shore, it iscalled the Jackass Penguin. In diving, its littleplumeless wings are used as fins, but on the land asfront legs.
