Description |
This display at Centennial Hall, Wayville features craft from girls from Vaughan House, which was opened at Enfield in 1947 (and operated from 1947-197) as a Government reformatory for girls who were state wards. It was formerly the Salvation Army run Barton Vale Girls' Home. Initially most girls were Protestant as Catholic girls were sent to the Convent of the Good Shepherd, The Pines. Also craft from girls from Seaforth Home was the new name given to Seaforth Convalescent Home at Somerton in 1946. Run by the government, Seaforth accommodated up to 100 children including, boys and girls, aged between 0 and 6, and girls up to the age of 18. Most were deemed to be destitute or neglected. This exhibit at Centennial Hall, Wayville, contains samples of the various crafts taught in the Department's Institutions. Including Vaughan House and Seaforth Home. The Children's Welfare and Public Relief Department operated from 1927-1966. Children's Welfare Department model house display, c. 1950's |
