Summary
[edit]DescriptionChilcompton S and D railway 2121992 9ea2e7a0.jpg |
English: Down S&D express approaching Chilcompton. View northward, down onto the Somerset & Dorset (Bath - Bournemouth) line just before the short tunnel a mile or so before Chilcompton Tunnel, on the gruelling eight miles of 1-in-50/60 up from Radstock to the Mendips summit at Masbury. This Summer Saturday express battling up the bank is the 07.00 from Cleethorpes to Bournemouth West, headed by LMS 2P 4-4-0 No. 40564 piloting SR Bulleid Light Pacific No. 34101 'Hartland'. These engines would have taken over at Bath (Green Park), the train having been hauled by a variety of LNE and LMS locomotives on its extraordinary journey via Lincoln (St Marks), Nottingham (Midland), Leicester (Midland) and Birmingham (New St.). (Before the War it left the S&D at Templecombe and went to Sidmouth and Exmouth by the SR)! Who on earth would have travelled the whole way?! |
