British Cold-war era Main Battle Tank (MBT) Official designation:- FV4201 Manufacturer:- Royal Ordnance Factory, Leeds Production:- 900 for UK, 1375 (approx.) for export Main armament:- Royal Ordnance L11A5 120mm rifled gun The Chieftain was the UKs principle MBT from the mid 1960’s until the early 1990’s, when it was replaced by the Challenger 1. This example was built in 1969 and is now part of the Imperial War Museum collection. It is seen on display in the Land Warfare Hall at Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK. 23rd May 2021 The following service history for this Chieftain is from the IWM website:- “Entered service May 1969 To 15/19th Hussars October 1969 Conversion to 'Totem Pole' standards December 1973 To No. 2 Armoured Delivery Squadron BAOR September 1974 To BATUS Suffield Canada March 1975 To No. 2 Armoured Delivery Squadron BAOR March 1978 To Queen's Royal Irish Hussars BAOR December 1978 To 3 RTR BAOR July 1979 To No.2 Armoured Delivery Squadron BAOR August 1982 (as stock) To 5th Inniskilling Dragoon Guards BAOR March 1983 To 4 RTR November 1984 In 1985/86 gun simulator system added To Central Vehicle Depot Ludgershall June 1988” |
