Summary

[edit]
Description

British Cold War era main battle tank (MBT) Official designation:- FV4201 Manufacturer:- Royal Ordnance Factory, Leeds Production:- 900 for UK, 1375 (approx.) for export Main armament:- Royal Ordnance L11A5 120mm rifled gun The Chieftain was the UKs principle MBT from the mid 1960’s until the early 1990’s, when it was replaced by the Challenger 1. The Mk.5 was the final production variant. This example is marked as FV478236 on the turret and is is maintained in running condition by Military Vehicle Wing of the Duxford Aviation Society. Duxford Airfield, Cambridgeshire, UK. 23rd May 2021

Note:- The identity ‘06 FA 89’ is believed to relate to a Mk3 and might not be genuine for this vehicle. It’s also possible that this vehicle was previously painted as ’01 EB 14’, which should be a Mk2. To add to the confusion, the official IWM list of exhibits give this as being a Mk.10.
