f the ligament,we can safely assume its integrity. Take, for example : 1884.) Gunn, Reduction of Dislocations. 457 The dorsal luxation of the hip. The superior and posterior portion of the ligament must be torn,or there could be no dislocation in this direction, while, from theposition of the limb at the instant of luxation, the anterior andinferior portion, being relaxed, remains untorn. Now, if weadduct, flex, and inwardly rotate the limb, we approximate thepoints of attachment of the untorn portion, and thus effectuallyrelax it. If we now apply force in the reverse direction to thatwhich produced the luxation, we shall be able to replace the dis-located head by the exercise of that amount of force which wasnecessary to cause the accident, minus the amount of forcerequired to rupture the ligaments and tissues which are tornasunder. The condition of the ligament in this luxation is illustrated inFigs. 1 and 2, Fig. 1 being an anterior, and Fig. 2 a posteriorview of the same spocimen.

Fig. 1.—Anterior view, showing tense Fig. 2.—Posterior view of same specimen, condition of anterior and inferior por- showing the tense state of the anterior and tion of capsule, and the loose state inferior untorn portion of capsular liga- of the ilio-femoral portion in the dorsal ment.dislocation. 458 Gunn, Reduction of Dislocations. (May, These figures—as is the case in all my illustrations—are madefrom a dissection of the parts, which dissection I also herewithexhibit. It is seen that the anterior and inferior portion of theligamentous capsule is untorn, tense, and holds the dislocatedhead firmly hooked outside the dorsal portion of the rim of theacetabulum, while that portion of the capsule between the anteri-or inferior spinous process of the ilium and the anterior inter-trochanteric line of the femur, which is reinforced and strength-ened by the ilio-femoral fibers, is quite loose, owing to theaprox-imation of these two points, in the shortened, adducted, and in-ternall
