The Institute is a popular pos-session in two senses—it has the support of over 13,000members, and last year over 1,000,000 people visitedits galleries. The Institute is now asking for the modestsum of $1,000,000 to carry on and develop the work ofone of Chicagos major activities and nearly one-third ofthis sum has already been subscribed. The Art Instituteis the recognized leader and dominant factor in Chicagosart world, and its call to the public to aid in financing itsnecessary expenditure and expansion is the result ofits position and growth. It faces a deficit in operatingincome and at the same time faces the need for expansionthat is nothing less than compulsory. One of the citysmost famous cultural institutions receives from but apart of the public support in entrance fees, while a smallSouth Park tax is but one-third or less of requirem
