Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Chhath is an ancient Indian festival, that is performed as thanksgiving to Surya - The Sun God for sustaining life on earth and granting Health, Prosperity & Abundance. According to Indian traditions, the sun god 'Surya' is the supreme deity which represents will-power, fame, the eyes, general vitality, courage and kingship. Unlike other Indian Poojas which involve idol worship, this festival is dedicated to worshipping a natural phenomenon which is in fact the life force of our planet.

The word chhath means sixthin Nepali, Maithili and Bhojpuri languages and the festival is celebrated on the sixth day of the month Kārtika of the Hindu lunar Bikram Sambat calendar. The word is a Prakriti derivation from the Sanskrit ṣaṣṭhi, meaning sixth. It is the longest festival after navratri.

It is a river bathing festival that follows a period of abstinence and ritual segregation of the worshiper (parvaitin) from the main household for four days. The parvaitin observes ritual purity, and sleeps on the floor on a single blanket.

Legend of Chhath Puja

It is believed that Surya Putra Karna who was the first to start this puja. According to the legends, Karna, Son of Surya & Ruler of Anga-Desh (Now Bhagalpur in Bihar) observed Chhath Puja or Surya Shashti with sheer devotion. It is said that Karna had gained supreme powers by performing Chhath rituals. This had made Karna grow into a powerful and valiant warrior.

Hence, it is believed that by worshipping Bhagwan Surya during Chhath Pooja, one can fulfill all their desires and come out of all pain and suffering. This is the only festival which has no involvement of any priest. The devotees offer their prayers to the setting sun, and then the rising sun.
