Summary

[edit]
Description

Between the 1970s and the 1990s, the Chevrolet Caprice, a large rear-wheel-drive sedan and wagon derived from the Chevrolet Impala, was the definitive heavy-duty vehicle for applications in police and taxi use. It was also popular as the definitive family vehicle for annual summer road trips; it could be considered a "land yacht," a term that encompasses large, cushy American vehicles with frilly styling elements. But between rising fuel prices, changing consumer tastes, and neglect, the large rear-wheel-drive land yachts lost popularity, and Chevrolet built the last Caprice in 1996.

Until this one. This newest Caprice is actually a product of General Motors' Australian subsidiary, Holden. In Australia, where old-fashioned large rear wheel drive sedans continue to do well, Holden's largest sedan had been the Statesman, and the latest Statesman now takes the Caprice name. This Australian Caprice is now offered in the US for police use only, and is an alternative to the domestic, but front wheel drive, Chevrolet Impala.

The Middle East also gets this Chevrolet Caprice. Additionally, this car has been marketed in other markets as well under different names. In China, where Buick sells very well and has significant brand equity, this car takes on the name Buick Park Avenue, a name long retired in the US. In South Korea, it was sold as Daewoo's flagship sedan, under the names Daewoo Statesman and Daewoo Veritas, before the Daewoo brand was retired and converted to Chevrolet.

This police car is one of many doing police duty near Space Shuttle Endeavour while it sits near Los Angeles International Airport during a break on its journey to California Science Center.
