DescriptionChevaliers du Christ Rio de Janeiro by Debret.jpg |
English: Knights of Christ wearing the gala costumes of the order in Brazil. Crosses of the order are also seen in the margin of the illustration. This order was the most traditional Luso-Brazilian order of knighthood. The order originated in the Portuguese Order of Christ founded by Pope John XXII and King Denis of Portugal in 1318. Today the order is still conferred by the Pope and the Portuguese Republic, but no longer by Brazil. In Brazil the order was known as the "Imperial Ordem de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo". |
