Chesterblade: stairway to Heaven?

English: Chesterblade: stairway to Heaven? In fact, this stairs in the north wall of the 1317742 are all that remains of the access to the rood loft. This would have taken the shape of beams over the chancel arch which would have held crucifixes and other figures, and were common from the 13th century. Most of them succumbed under the Reformation under Henry VIII, and this is all the sign there is of the one here at Chesterblade, which was made in the 15th century. |
