Chester Hipolit Kluzik (August 12th 1911-July 9th 1993) Chester was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Frank Kluzik (1883-1979) and Sophie Kluzik (1886-1969). They were both born in the country of Poland in the city of Krakow. Chester had one sibling sister named Lottie H Jenc(Kluzik) (1915-2009) High School Yearbook, (HIPOLIT KLUZIK) 2179 West 11th "Chester Hipolit is mischievous, He’s a lover of fun, For that very reason He’s disliked by none." Chester H. Kluzik appointed as an Ambulanceman on 07/01/1937 and assigned Badge Number 1400. Appointed a Patrolman on 09/01/1937 and assigned Badge Number 1001. Retired as Traffic Commissioner 06/01/1971; End of Watch 01/09/1993. Chesters highest work achievement was that he was the city of Clevelands Police Traffic Commissioner for 26 years. He served during World War 2. He served as a pilot on D-Day during World War 2 and was enlisted for 8 years. Military serial#: 35517637. Enlisted: October 19, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. Military branch: Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA. Rank: Private, Selectees (enlisted Men) Terms of enlistment: Enlistment For The Duration Of The War Or Other Emergency, Plus Six Months, Subject To The Discretion Of The President Or Otherwise According To Law: When Chester came back home he became a ambulance-man. Then he found his true calling as a police officer. Over the years Chester was quickly promoted. My Great Grandma Ruth Washington at age 20 made the newspaper with an announcement she’s is getting married to my Great Grandpa Chester Kluzik! Ruth was the cousin of Clevelands Police Sargent at the time George Washington. Ruth was a Clerk in the traffic Bureau while Chester was in his 2nd year as a Patrolman in the accident prevention Bureau. They where Married October 25th, 1939. Chester was a Patrolman then became a Sargent, then Captain Chester Hipolite Kluzik became the City Traffic Commissioner at age 56 for the Cleveland Police Department. Chester previously had 31 years of experience as a Cop & 25 of those years where in the traffic department before the big promotion. He became really good friends with a lot of well known famous people throughout his career. “Chester Kluzik said the traffic unit had to borrow men from enforcement units to direct heavy traffic at some intersections. Cts carries nearly 300,000 passengers daily on 850 buses and 90 rapid transit cars that run on rails. Cts officials Laid the pay raises plus fringe benefits offered in the proposed contract would Cost the system $8 million Over the two years.” During the blizzard of 1971, over a thousand cars were abandoned on the city streets according to Traffic Commissioner Chester Kluzik. The Tow Unit was seriously handicaped in their efforts to clean up the streets. Sergeant Donald Wills told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the city had 11 tow trucks but only 6 were available the night of the storm, and they were on the streets that night. The other 5 were in the city garage for repairs. Of those, 3 had been out of operation more than 3 months waiting for new engines. He also advised that the city was waiting for an order of 11 new trucks.

Chester Kluzik served 26 years as Cleveland Police Traffic Commissioner. He served as a member of the Cleveland Police Department for 55 years. 9 of Chester Kluzik and Ruth Washingtons family members where in the Cleveland Police Mounted Unit. Chester and Ruth had 3 daughters named Elizabeth Ellen Kluzik, Karen Jean (Fechner) Kluzik, Jude Ann (Tibbetts) Kluzik. My Grandma is Jude Kluzik was born October 10th 1943. My grandmother Ruth never forgave him when he surprised her with his dear friend the famous Frank Sinatra! The did a prank house visit at night after pick up and she was in curlers and robe! Cell phones would have helped way back then! On September 17th 1991, My Great Grandpa Chester held me in the hospital. I was his first great grandson he ever met. “He’s a Good looking kid” He never held babies. Sunday dinner ways had good polish food. He was so talented in putting in rec rooms and bathrooms. He Would always have party’s and Great grandma Ruth loved a good party. Dance for us RUTHIE! Great Grandpa later Ran an elevator in downtown Cleveland. Chester Kluzik would speak only when spoken to. When it came to having a conversation, Chester was revealed as a larger than life man who knew everybody and everything in the Cleveland area. Chester Kluzik always kept up with everything happening throughout the country. He helped in the construction of “Dead mans Curb” and was the first Helicopter officer in Cleveland Police Departments history. He became really good friends with a lot of well known people throughout his 26 years as Cleveland Police Traffic Commissioner. Traffic Commissioner Chester Kluzik called it “the worst and longest traffic jam in the history of Cleveland.” A Feb. 1 storm dumped a foot of snow on city streets. Buses ran up to five hours late. Kluzik called for leg- islation requiring drivers to use snow tires in the winter.
