Though not possessing original or strong characteristics,he developed to a refined point—often at the sacrifice of strength—the qualities of Gilbert Stuart and other eighteenth centurypainters here and In England. This portrait demonstrates hisability to suggest character. He was a refined colourist, adiscriminating and sensitive painter. The picture is rich intone and well composed. The red shawl is effectively intro-duced to cover partialh the black bodice, and all the drapery,particularh the lace cap, is painted with much delicacy.
