| Description |
English: Chester "The Roodee" Racecourse Chester's "The Roodee" Racecourse, is according to official records, the oldest racecourse still in use in England and also thought to be the smallest racecourse of significance in England at just over one mile (1.6 km). At the centre of the in field is a raised mound with a small sandstone cross known as a "rood" and from this the race course derives the name "Roodee", a corruption of "Rood Eye", meaning "The Island of the Cross". Originally the site of the Roman harbour, prior to the silting up of the Dee, there has been racing here since 1539. |
