Summary

[edit]
Description

The vertically-oriented structure that is slightly projecting from the limestone cave wall is a chert nodule. Chert (also known as "flint"), is a cryptocrystalline quartzose sedimentary rock. Chert nodules in limestone are usually diagenetic chert masses, formed by dissolution and remobilization of silica after burial.

This cave wall is part of Diamond Caverns in Kentucky, which is developed in the Ste. Genevieve Limestone (upper Meramecian Series, upper Middle Mississippian).

Locality: Diamond Caverns, ~1.7 air-miles north-northwest of the town of Park City, northwestern Barren County, west-central Kentucky, USA
