English: A chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense Marine reaches the bottom of a cavern and prepares to detach equipment March 29 during confined space entry training on Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. Training in the 84-foot deep cavern allowed CBRN Marines to train in a real world underground environment that presented geographic and tactical challenges. During the training, the Marines were lowered into the cavern in teams of two or three and performed rigging, reconnaissance, sampling and casualty evacuation. Together, the teams of Marines measured oxygen levels in the cavern, located and neutralized threats. The Marines are with Headquarters Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force. |
