[edit]DescriptionCheirocystis fultonensis (fossil rhombiferans) (Fulton Shale, Upper Ordovician; northern Kentucky, USA) (35760100756).jpg |
Cheirocystis fultonensis Sumrall & Schumacher, 2002 - fossil rhombiferans from the Ordovician of Kentucky, USA. These rare fossils are from the famous Cincinnatian Series of the tristate area of Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana. Rocks in the Cincinnatian were deposited in relatively shallow marine facies during the Late Ordovician. The Cincinnatian succession is mostly interbedded limestones and shales. Most of the limestones are event beds (= tempestites), deposited during ancient storms. The fossils shown above are rhombiferan cystoids - two heads and a complete specimen. Rhombiferans are an extinct group of sessile, benthic, short-stemmed echinoderms. Classification: Animalia, Echinodermata, Rhombifera, Glyptocystitida, Cheirocrinidae Stratigraphy: Fulton Submember, lower Kope Formation, lower Edenian Stage, lower Cincinnatian Series, Upper Ordovician Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site in northern Kentucky (but very likely from the Woolcott South Outcrop - roadcut on the eastern side of Rt. 1159, just south of the Rt. 9-Rt. 1159 intersection, southern side of the town of Woolcott, northern Bracken County, northern Kentucky, USA; 38° 43' 52.53" North latitude, 84° 06' 04.77" West longitude) |
