Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 112-135 cm; Weight: 39-65 kg; Identification: The cheetah has a tawny coat with small black spots. Black tear lines run from the inner corner of its eyes to the corner of its mouth; Habitat: Open country, deserts, savannas; Diet: Carnivore: gazelles, impala, wildebeest, hares, birds; Reproduction: Cheetahs do not have a regular breeding season. As many as eight cubs may be born after the 95-day gestation period. The cubs are weaned when they are three months old. Cheetahs can live for 12 years in the wild; Social Structure: While females are solitary, males may form permanent groups (usually with littermates); Behavior: Cheetahs usually hunt in the early morning and late afternoon; Status: Vulnerable (Asian populations are endangered): human hunting for fur, habitat loss; Interesting Facts: Running at 69.5 miles per hour, cheetahs are the fastest land animal.
